IET

A synopsis of “Lasers, Camera, Action” – What’s hot in industrial sensors

IET, Mersey & W. Cheshire Network  - 30th October at 6pm.
Birkenhead YMCA, Hope Prospect, Birkenhead, CH41 2TJ

IET, Swindon Network – 11th December at 7pm
Swindon – Venue yet to be announced

IET, Wales & South England Network – 5th March at 7pm
Cardiff – Venue yet to be announced

IET, Herford and Worcester Network – 7th March at 7pm
Worcester – Venue yet to be announced

These evening lectures for the regional networks of the IET will describe and then demonstrate how lasers, smart cameras, 3D scanners and optical ASICs (application specific IC’s) are the latest technologies used to achieve robust, reliable sensors for detection identification, or machine safety applications.

The lecture will explain the basic principles of operation of optical sensors and the wide range of types and specifications that are available. Advice will be given of what factors need to be considered to select the correct sensor for an application in the real world of industry.

Barcode & 2D code reading systems will be explained and the differences between laser based or vision based systems will be explained. Lasers will also feature in an introduction to machine safety using optical sensing in light curtains or laser scanning.

The evening will conclude by showing the latest product developments and how optical sensors have advanced to overcome the challenges of industry including a demonstration of 3D sensing and vision systems.

Come along and play with our conveyor built out of Lego and relive your childhood.

A synopsis of An Introduction to Machine Safety

IET, Herford and Worcester Network – 14th January at 7pm
Worcester – Venue yet to be announced

IET, Mersey & W.Cheshire Network – 21st March at 6pm
Liverpool, John Moors University

This evening lecture will discuss how machine safety equipment is used to prevent injury and harm to people in their workplace, from machinery, equipment, stock, etc.

The presentation will outline the reasoning for machinery safety and how the legislation such as EN ISO 13849-1 impacts upon machine builders and end-users.

The basic principles of optical sensors will be explained, before moving onto explain how to implement optical or mechanical guarding of a danger point, a perimeter, access or of a danger zone.

Lasers will also feature in an introduction on how to use safety laser scanning as an alternative to more convention light guards, light curtains or mechanical guard.

The session will be an abridged version of the well known half-day training workshops Kevin Ellison presents on machine safety.
