> Sven Reichersdörfer, Trainee electronics technician for devices and systems

When I started my training as an electrician for devices and systems, my goal was to accumulate as much knowledge as possible and get an impression of what it is like to work in an industrial company. I either worked on my own projects in the various departments or I supported my colleagues with subproject assignments. One of which was the development of a power supply unit in collaboration with other trainees in the electronics development department. We also developed and implemented a tool that enables employees in other countries to test our products with different interfaces and a PLC, without having the products present on site. In my practical training in the various departments at Leuze, I could often apply the theoretical knowledge I acquired at vocational school. The collaboration with the colleagues was open and friendly, and they were always willing to help if I had any questions. I particularly enjoyed working on projects in a team. It was also great to get to experience many different departments. This kept things interesting and I got to know many different colleagues throughout the company. I would train at Leuze again because I enjoy the field of sensor systems and I think the products from Leuze are great. What I enjoyed in particular was working on a solution for various technical problems with a congenial group of colleagues.

> Franziska Heinzelmann, industrial management assistant trainee with additional qualification "International Business Management with Foreign Languages"

I was very excited to start my training as an industrial management assistant with additional qualification "International Business Management with Foreign Languages," because I had already learned a lot of theory at vocational college and was eager to find out how it all works in practice. I admit I was a bit trepidatious at first, because all I knew was business theory, and I had very little experience with technical topics. Sensor systems were completely foreign to me at the time. But my concerns evaporated quickly, because every new employee at Leuze is given a tailored introduction right at the start, during which all sensors and their functionality are explained. This gave me the fundamental knowledge necessary to navigate the various departments on a day-to-day basis.

I worked at many different departments during my training. I especially liked the marketing department, where I was tasked with organizing a two day meeting with our Austrian distributor, among other things. And, of course, I also participated in the meeting itself and learned a lot about how we work together across borders. During my time in sales, I also had the opportunity to help with the "Interpack" trade fair in Düsseldorf for a week to support the colleagues at reception and tend to our guests. This gave me a lot of direct contact to the customers, and I learned a lot about how our sensors are used and what questions our customers have.

During my stint abroad in Madrid I had the opportunity to broaden my language skills, so now I speak Spanish every time I’m in touch with our subsidiary in Spain. This enabled me to significantly build upon my knowledge from school, and now I can also communicate in "business Spanish."

Working with the colleagues was always very pleasant and we had a lot of fun at work. I always had a dedicated point of contact at each department and could ask questions at any time. That was important to me, because my goal was to learn as much as I could for my professional life and graduate with good grades. Whenever possible, my department preferences for the coming weeks were always taken into account in the staff schedule.

I would train at Leuze again, because even as a trainee I was involved in projects from the start and I was assigned tasks with responsibility. It should also be mentioned that training at a medium-sized company has a major advantage in that you get to experience many different departments, are assigned a wide variety of tasks and get to know the processes from A-Z.

After successfully completing my training, I was hired as assistant to the Vice President Sales Europe and have a lot of international responsibilities. I am looking forward to continuously contributing a small part to a big success!

> Alena Gschwind, industrial management assistant trainee with additional qualification "International Business Management with Foreign Languages"

After graduating from high school I decided to start my training as an industrial management assistant with the additional qualification "International Business Management with Foreign Languages" in order to broaden my foreign language skills and to learn about as many departments as possible in a company.

At the start of my training I was given a staff schedule and the opportunity to switch departments every six weeks. Leuze is adamant about promoting independent working. For example, in the HR department I was allowed to come up with a concept for the introductory day of the new trainees and students all by myself, or in order processing I was allowed to add new customer orders to the system independently. Working in many different departments enabled me to get an overview of the processes in the company and to clearly understand how each individual department contributes to the company’s success. The colleagues in the various departments spent significant amounts of time explaining the processes and tasks to me, and they always made me feel as though I am part of the team. I always greatly enjoyed planning the company parties of Leuze together with other trainees and students. We were allowed to incorporate our own ideas and take responsibility for the projects. The special highlights of my training were two stays abroad in London and Madrid.

I wouldn’t hesitate to apprentice at Leuze again, because I was supported by the colleagues and training supervisors throughout my apprenticeship and I was optimally prepared for my future career. Working at all the different departments allowed me to get a sense of where my strong suits lie and what direction I may want to take professionally.

After successfully concluding my training at Leuze, I decided to pursue Studies at the University of Applied sciences Neu-Ulm with focus on business administration.

> Colin Schmidt, trainee as warehouse logistics specialist

My name is Colin Schmidt and I am training as a warehouse logistics specialist. I wanted my training to be varied, meaning that I wanted to learn more about the various company departments and not just focus on the warehouse alone.

I have already familiarized myself with many different tasks in the warehouse, such as production logistics, in which the production area is supplied with materials or where the goods are picked. I also worked in the classic shipping area where the goods are packaged and mailed. Another aspect I learned about is how our products are manufactured. I was even allowed to build sensors myself.

As part of my training I learned how a warehouse is built as a whole and what the processes and interlinkages are. I also learned how delivery bills are structured and what needs to be added to a picking list in the shipping department.

All of the colleagues are very outgoing and willing to help. The team spirit is very good and we have a pleasant work atmosphere. The friendship with the other trainees and students at Leuze is also great – we get together once a month in order to socialize or go out. What I enjoy the most about my training is the variety, because the stints at each department are relatively short and I regularly get to know new areas.

After everything I have learned here, I would train at Leuze again! When I started my training I was handed a flowchart that showed when I would be in which department. The application process was also quick and straightforward.

> Stefan Gerlach – Dual course of study with major in BA for international business

My name is Stefan Gerlach, I am 22 years old and I completed a dual course of study with major in BA for international business at Leuze.

I have always been interested in foreign languages and cultures, so a study course with an international aspect was the obvious choice for me. This is why I also expected to work on many projects that involved the international subsidiaries at Leuze. After completing my study course, I can say that my expectations were completely fulfilled.

In marketing, for example, I worked on a project related to the future orientation of our international portal marketing. What this means is that we looked at how we are currently positioned internationally on product portals and how we can continue doing so in an optimized manner in the future. During my two-month practical training at our Shenzen/China office I worked on a sales project, and my bachelor thesis also concerned the future orientation on Asian markets.

I learned quite a lot about project management during my practical training, such as what the work in international sales entails, how marketing campaigns are structured and how supply chain processes are created and controlled. I learned that soft skills are particularly important in the real world, meaning how to best deal with (international) customers, suppliers and colleagues. The colleagues in the various departments taught me a lot, and the work environment was always welcoming and pleasant. I would do a dual study program at Leuze again because of the outstanding team spirit and friendly work environment, and because the company offers students many opportunities to grow both personally and professionally.

> Sven Gröner – Dual course of study for Bachelor of Engineering – Electrical Engineering

My name is Sven Gröner, and I am currently completing a dual course of study for a Bachelor of Engineering with a specialization in electrical engineering. I decided on a dual course of study at Leuze because I wanted to combine the theory from university with practical work on projects in the electrical engineering field. In the practical phases I have mainly worked in our electronics development department, where I was able to contribute my ideas to various tasks. For example, I worked on the programming of an STM32 processor, which was later used in a photoelectric retro-reflective sensor. I also developed a motor controller for the polygon wheel motor of a bar code reader and a compact IO-Link analyzer box. During my training I already learned how the different sensor principles work, what the programming of different microcontrollers in C looks like and how analog and digital circuits can be designed. I especially enjoyed working with microcontrollers! Working together with my colleagues is very pleasant, and they always make time for me if I have any questions or problems. I would do a DH course at Leuze again because the work is always interesting and deals with different subject areas, and because I appreciate the helpfulness and the friendly interaction with the Sensor People.

> Thomas Ullmann – Dual course of study for Bachelor of Engineering – Mechanical Engineering/specialization in design and development

I decided on a dual course of study because I wanted to do a practice-oriented course in the field of design and development, where you can start working in a manufacturing company directly.

At the beginning of my studies, getting to know the production technologies and testing technology as well as supporting my first development projects were on the agenda. Then I started my own basic research in the field of adhesive technology, the construction technology of a binary switching sensor and mounting systems.

During my apprenticeship at Leuze, I learned a lot about the procedures and processes in a medium-sized company. I got extensive insights into various manufacturing processes and their selection criteria based on quantity, price and function. I found the areas of plastic injection molding and additive manufacturing (3D printing) particularly interesting, as these were not dealt with in such detail in my studies. I also learned a lot about communication with national and international business partners. Working with my colleagues was always very pleasant and they were always ready to answer my questions. Among other things, I particularly enjoyed doing research in the laboratory. It is amazing how often the theory learned in class actually applies to measurement series! I would study again at Leuze because the Sensor People have great team spirit and there is a good working atmosphere.

> Fundraising by the Max-Eyth school Kirchheim/Teck

The trainees from Leuze took part in the charity fun run organized by the student council of the commercial Max-Eyth school in Kirchheim to benefit the German Childhood Cancer Foundation. The goal of the student run was to run as many laps on the 1.3 kilometer course as possible during a two hour period. The result was 1,150 laps, which is the equivalent of the distance from Hamburg to Munich and back again. Nearly 43 of these kilometers were run by our four trainees. For each lap that was completed, Leuze made a donation of 50 cents and then rounded up the amount to a final donation of 600 euros.

We warmly welcome nine new trainees and DH students to Leuze! The introductory event offered a lot of information about the training process, a company tour and an overview of the individual departments. All previous trainees and DH students were present at the team building game that followed, so that initial contacts could be made here as well. We wish all the new trainees and DH students a good start and an interesting and successful apprenticeship with us!

> Trainee excursion with factory and canoe tour

The first stop of the trainee excursion was a tour of the factory in Unterstadion. That is where the subsidiary Leuze electronic assembly, a full-service partner, offers all process and manufacturing technology services for complete electronic assembly and device manufacturing, from E-samples and prototypes to series products.
After lunch at a beer garden with hearty Swabian meals, it was off to a canoe tour in Lautertal. The wild journey on the Lauter started in three-person canoes, hoping not to fall into the water as the temperature was 20 degrees – everyone arrived at the finish happy and dry after a two-hour journey!

After reviewing all submitted applications, we invite suitable candidates to – depending on the apprenticeship – either an interview or an aptitude test including interview with our training manager at our company headquarters in Owen. We then make the decision as to whom we would like to award the apprenticeship.
