The packaging industry uses labels of various formats, sizes, materials, and textures that are affixed to products and packaging by means of labeling machines. The accuracy of the label placement is very important in this process. Label placement describes the precise positioning of the label on the product or packaging, even at high conveyor speeds. The GSX fork sensor is the world's first sensor of its kind and combines the two detection methods of ultrasonics and light in a single housing. It brings together the advantages of both principles and can be used very flexibly. It reliably, quickly, and precisely detects a wide range of labels, regardless of their material and surface characteristics. Even labels made of inhomogeneous cavitated BOPP material can be reliably detected through the optical operating principle. The fork sensor is thus especially suitable for applications where a wide range of labels need to be detected, which, in the past, frequently required the use of multiple different sensors.

Detection of non-transparent labels on label-carrier combinations

Requirement:

For position-accurate dispensing of non-transparent labels onto the products/packaging, it is critical to reliably detect the labels (or the gaps between two labels) on the carrier tape. Optical fork sensors must be capable of reliably detecting labels with challenging shapes (e.g., round or oval) to prevent machine downtime or inaccurate dispensing due to unreliable detection. The fork sensor must be easy to set up for all types of labels.

Solution:

The GS61 and GS63B optical fork sensors reliably detect all non-transparent labels – even those with irregular shapes and outlines. This means that machines can be fitted with only one fork sensor, regardless of the application. The fork sensors are also easy to set up, either with a potentiometer or by means of the single button teach function. The slimline-design (reduced fork height) allows the sensors to be installed close to the dispensing point.
