Position monitoring during vehicle body transport


In BMW body shell production (1 Series), transverse side-tracking skates which transport body shells from one production line to a second parallel line must be positioned and position-monitored. In the past, measurement systems with a perforated sheet were used. However, this solution required high maintenance effort and machine downtimes in the event of damage were very long. This is why the automobile manufacturer demands a simple and insusceptible length measurement system. In addition, connection to the SEW-MOVIDRIVE should be possible.


The AMS 304i optical distance measurement systems with matching reflective tape are employed to fulfill these requirements. This laser measurement system is immediately ready for use. Should the measurement beam be interrupted, a reference drive is not necessary. The system outputs the measurement data in such a way that it can be processed directly by the SEW drive. This saves the automobile manufacturer extra costs and effort.
