Flexible use: RDH 200 series RFID readers

Compact with a reading range of up to 100 mm

Modern identification systems such as RFID are an indispensable component of automated production control systems for seamless production process tracking and efficient material flow monitoring.

Space is often limited, particularly in production cells and on conveyor lines. The high-frequency readers in the RDH 202/242 series stand out for their compact dimensions, can be mounted very easily and flexibly thanks to their design, and still offer a wide range of applications with a reading range of up to 100 mm.

The new RFID readers are available as RDH 242 with IO-Link or as RDH 202 with RS 232 interface.

The highlight of this RFID series is its suitability for NFC applications: Besides the RFID industry standard ISO 15693, RDH 202/242 also supports ISO 14443A and reads and writes RFID tags in accordance with NFC Forum Types 2 and 5. This means that the readers can also be used for authentication on machines via NFC tags, for example.

Advantages for you

  • High reading range in a compact size: With their reading range of up to 100 mm (depending on the RFID transponder used), the RDH 202/242 series’ RFID readers can be used flexibly in production control and assembly areas.
  • Simple integration via IO-Link: As an IO-Link version (RDH 242), this RFID reader fully meets the requirements of IO-Link standard 1.1.3 and comes with the latest IODD to enable the product to be integrated into control systems in no time.
  • NFC tag reading: ISO 14443A tags are supported in addition to the common high-frequency industry standard ISO 15693. In particular, NFC tag (Types 2, 5) applications are also possible, for example for user authentication on machines.
  • Temperature range down to -32°C: With a temperature resistance down to -32°C in operation, the RDH 202/242 offers the best value on the market. Applications in deep-freeze warehouses are therefore possible without any problems.
  • Flexible mounting options: The back of the device is designed as a mounting plate that combines quick and flexible screw-mounting options with particularly good accessibility. Direct mounting on metallic surfaces is also possible.
  • Attractive price-performance ratio: Technical advantages and benefits combined with competitive pricing.

Highlights

High reading range up to 100 mm
RFID200H_700x500px

The compact device size of 68 x 68 x 42 mm achieves reading ranges of up to 100 mm (depending on tag type and tag size). This is a leading value in market comparisons. This allows applications to be implemented even in confined installation spaces.

Compatibility with NFC
NFC_700x500px

The highlight of this device class is its compatibility with NFC. Typically, products in this segment are limited to the classic high-frequency RFID industry standard ISO 15693. The RDH 202/242 also includes an implementation of the ISO 14443A standard and the NFC Forum Types 2 and 5, which means that RFID tags with a large data memory as well as NFC tags can be used. This enables extended application scenarios in industrial environments that require, for example, the authentication of operating personnel on machines.

Quickly integrated into the system control with IO-Link

The RDH 242 is designed as an IO-Link model and thus for applications in factory automation and production control where a large number of sensors and actuators are installed in the system. The installation as well as the detection and transfer of data at production level must be quick and easy. It should preferably be ideal for capturing small amounts of data, such as the 64-bit unique ID on the RFID tag that represents a container or workpiece. With the help of the supplied IO Device Description (IODD), any RFID reader can be integrated into the system control with little effort.

Can be used in deep-freeze warehouses

With an operating temperature range down to -32°C, the RDH 202/242 delivers the best value that allows applications to be implemented in deep-freeze areas.

Applications

Identification of containers on a conveyor line

Requirement:
In the material flow, containers are automatically transported to the desired destinations. To do this, the containers and their loads must be reliably identified at loading, transfer or distribution stations as well as in the warehouse.

Solution:
RFID can be used to solve identification tasks when bar code labels are not reliably readable, e.g. due to increasing soiling of the containers or regularly required cleaning processes. The RDH 202/242 can be used to reliably read containers with a fixed RFID tag position and a defined read distance, even dynamically. When using so-called onMetal tags, it can also read metal containers.

Production control in production cells

Requirement:
Production cells are usually lacking in space. Identification systems must therefore be compact and offer good accessibility during installation. Individual production steps are often documented on the RFID tag. This means that in addition to identifying a workpiece, component or tray, writing processes are also required.

Solution:
The RFID readers in the RDH 202/242 series have very compact dimensions of 68 x 68 x 42 mm (99 x 68 x 42 mm with mounting plate) and can be installed very quickly thanks to flexible mounting options. The implemented command sets also allow data to be written to the RFID tag, with full compatibility with high-frequency standards ISO 15693 and 14443A to provide a particularly wide choice of tags with different memory sizes.

User authentication on machines

Requirement:
To be able to make parameter entries or configuration changes to machines or system controls, individual rights are often assigned depending on the user role. The operating personnel must authenticate themselves at the machine to be able to make entries.

Solution:
Thanks to NFC compatibility, the operating personnel can use individually programmed NFC cards or key fobs, for example, which are detected by the system using the RDH 202/242. They are then authenticated using previously assigned user rights. This also makes it possible for employees to use their electronic staff card, which they usually use for time recording, for authentication, so long as it uses NFC communication.
