Rotary encoders for measuring speed, position, and velocity in machines and systems

Measuring sensor solutions play a central role in industrial automation – both in the detection of linear motion and in the precise determination of rotational motion. While optical or ultrasonic sensor technologies are available for linear applications, rotary encoders offer a reliable solution for measuring the position, speed, and direction of motion of rotating components, thereby opening up additional application possibilities in automation technology. Depending on the requirements, Leuze’s product portfolio includes both incremental and absolute rotary encoders. Their applications range from intralogistics and robotics to packaging and wood processing, as well as machine tools and use in the automotive industry. The products are manufactured and tested according to high European quality standards and are available worldwide. Particular emphasis is placed on a wide range of resolutions, high axle load capacity, as well as ease of use and quick commissioning. This ensures that suitable solutions are available for a wide variety of automation tasks, enabling flexible sensor selection and versatile combination possibilities.

Applications

Packaging: Roll material winding control

Requirement:

Automated unwinding and cutting of paper and film in tubular bag machines, pallet wrappers, or labeling systems requires precise control of the material feed. To control the unwinding process reliably, the rotational movement of the film roll must be detected by a sensor mounted on the shaft.

Solution:

The EI 024 incremental rotary encoder detects the rotational movement and, depending on the selected resolution (pulses per revolution), delivers precise electrical signals to the motor controller via the appropriate interface. Various models are available to accommodate different shaft geometries and resolution requirements.

Packaging: Film control for pallet wrappers

Requirement:

To monitor film tension and regulate film unwinding, rotational speed must be controlled.

Solution:

An incremental encoder from the EI series, for example, is well-suited for this purpose – either with an impeller for direct detection of material movement or as a compact version for direct shaft mounting. Depending on the application, various designs, resolutions, and pulse counts are available.

Intralogistics: Conveyor belt speed monitoring

Requirement:

In storage systems and material flow technology, rotary encoders play a key role in monitoring conveyor belts and other continuously operating transport systems. By reliably measuring rotational movement and speed, they help monitor proper operation and ensure system availability. At the same time, they detect operating conditions such as idle mode and use this information to specifically reduce energy consumption. The measurement is to be performed using a sensor that monitors the rotational movement directly on a conveyor roller.

Solution:

An EI series rotary encoder can be flexibly mounted on a conveyor roller or directly on the conveyor belt via a drive wheel to reliably measure rotational movement and speed and provide this data for system control. Various resolutions and interfaces are available depending on requirements.

Additional application areas

  • Industrial automation: In production and assembly systems, rotary encoders precisely measure speed, position, and motion sequences. This enables reliable control and synchronization of machine movements and material feeds.
  • Paper, printing, and metal industries: Rotary encoders measure the rotational speed and movement of cylinders and rollers, thereby supporting precise process control. They enable reliable control and synchronization of the respective processes, particularly during material supply and removal.

Thanks to the wide range of possible combinations, the product series offers a large selection of models for different application requirements. For clarity, the article list begins with the complete technical specifications.
