S= K x T + DDS + Z

S – Safety distance [mm]

K – Approach speed [mm/ms]

The approach speed K is specified in the standard. If the resulting safety distance is greater than 500 mm, an approach speed of 1,600 mm/s is used. This corresponds to the speed of a person walking. If the resulting safety distance is less than or equal to 500 mm, an approach speed of 2,000 mm/s is used. This corresponds to the speed when operating with the hand or arm.

T – Overall system response time [ms]

DDS – Operating range [mm];

  • DDO: Reaching over the protective field
  • DDT: Reaching through the protective field
  • DDU: Reaching under a protective field

The operating range DDS for the orthogonal (right-angled) approach results from the protective device’s detection capability and the mounting situation.

There are three variants for DDS:

  • DDT results from the a protective device’s detection capability. Put simply: How far can you stretch your hand between two beams? This value is calculated according to the formula.
  • DDO is a table value that results from the ratio of the top beam of the protective device to the height of the point of operation. Put simply: How far can you stretch your arm across a light curtain?
  • DDU is a combination of a calculated value and a table value, and is derived from the gap beneath a light curtain and the height of the point of operation. Put simply: How far can you stretch your arm under a light curtain?

The largest of the three values DDT, DDO and DDU is to be used as DDS in the calculation.
