The new ODT3CL1-2M diffuse sensor has been developed for applications where the presence of objects is to be detected over long distances and measurement values are to be output via IO-Link. The laser sensor with background suppression works with TOF (time of flight) technology and achieves an operating range of two meters.

The switching sensor with measurement value output has two independent switching points and is very versatile: In intralogistics, it can be integrated in shuttles for different applications and thus ensures reliable positioning, presence testing and compartment occupation checks. In the case of AGVs (automated guided vehicles), the diffuse sensor monitors e.g. the position of the transport material. Compact diffuse sensors with high operating ranges are also used in automobile production, e.g. to control robot grippers or for quality control. 

The 3C series includes compact photoelectric sensors and diffuse sensors with high operating ranges and large function reserves. With the new ODT3CL1-2M laser diffuse sensor we have extended the operating range of our distance sensors. The ODT 3C diffuse sensor with triangulation principle, already included in the 3C series, achieves operating ranges up to 150 mm and is suitable for packaging processes, for example.

Detection and output of measurement values with one sensor

The ODT3CL1-2M solves detection tasks and supplies the machine control with distance information. To perform these tasks with just one sensor, the sensor must supply both switching information and measurement values. For the customer, this saves time and money during procurement, installation and commissioning as well as during operation. The two independently adjustable switching points enable shuttles, for example, to optimally set and vary their speed in order to transport goods quickly to their target destination.

Compact sensor for many applications involving large distances

The TOF (time of flight) technology enables operating ranges of several meters. Thanks to this technology, the sensor combines an extremely small and space-saving housing (11.4 mm x 34.2 mm x 18.3 mm) with a large operating range – and all this as a diffuse sensor with background suppression. The laser diffuse sensor can be used in many applications: e.g. on shuttles, AGVs and stacker cranes as well as in the automotive industry and packaging processes. 

Range adjustment remotely as well as via the teach button on the device

The operating range can be adjusted numerically via IO-Link (Remote Set Distance). The device calibration also enables a high level of accuracy when adjusting via remote. As a result, the switching points in the device are adjusted almost entirely independently of reflections when adjustments are made via IO-Link and when the device is exchanged for a replacement part. The high accuracy and the device calibration are also extremely beneficial when it comes to changing the device, because the presetting can be transferred to the new device loss-free via IO-Link without having to repeat the teach.

Extensive diagnostic data with IO-Link

The sensor supplies extensive diagnostic data from the device, e.g. temperature value, signal quality, object counter and warning. Measurement value transmission in IO-Link for monitoring a specific window area.


Intralogistics: Compartment occupation check with shuttles


Shuttles must transport goods safely, identify free spaces reliably and avoid collisions. Before a container or carton can be placed on the shelf, it must be checked whether the space is free.


The ODT3CL1-2M scanning sensors can be used for almost all applications on a shuttle. The sensors even detect objects with colored structure reliably with an operating range up to two meters.

Intralogistics: Fine alignment of an AGV 


AGVs transport pallets in production and logistics facilities. In order to detect the pallet with the load receptacle, it must be detected where the spaces of the pallet feet are located and whether they are freely accessible.


The ODT3CL1-2M optical sensors monitor that the pallets are correctly received and transferred. They operate independently of the material and have precise switching points. Two digital switching outputs mean that the sensors can also be used for compartment fine positioning.

Intralogistics: Determining the position of the pallet on the load receptacle


When picking up a pallet, the distance between the pallet and the end face of the load receptacle must be determined in order to stop the forward movement in good time.


The ODT3CL1-2M distance sensors determine the distance to objects reliably and with high repeat accuracy. Thanks to the TOF technology, the sensors have a high operating range of two meters.

Automotive industry: Removal of body parts from a magazine using a gripper


In the automotive industry, robot cells are frequently used, e.g. in vehicle body construction. In these cells, robot grippers must reliably collect e.g. body parts from magazines. This process must be performed without problem despite different material surfaces and magazine fill levels.


The ODT3CL1-2M diffuse sensor with background suppression and TOF technology has two independent switching points and an operating range of two meters. When the first switching point is reached, a signal is sent to the robot gripper telling it to slow down its movement. The second switching point provides the gripping signal. The measurement values are used for monitoring the process and detecting empty magazines. The small design of the sensor allows it to be integrated in the gripper of the robot arm.

Automotive industry: Detection of body parts on the feeder table at the accumulating conveyor


The robot gripper collects a body part from the accumulation conveyor and places it on the feeder table. Despite different surface characteristics, the presence of the component must be detected, a quality check must be performed or a distinction must be made between components. The body parts are then passed on to the next processing steps or placed in storage.


In addition to detecting the presence of the component, the ODT3CL1-2M sensors additionally detect defined reference points on the body part in order to perform a quality check. The detection of defined structures of the body part also enables the sensor to distinguish between different variants. Here the sensor works reliably even with different surface characteristics.

Packaging processes: Carton feeding


In a packaging machine, the fill level of cartons must be monitored continuously and an alert must be triggered to ensure that they are refilled in good time.


If two fill levels are defined, the ODT3CL1-2M can use its two independent switching points to send a signal prompting refilling or information on the fill level. Furthermore, the current fill level can be queried at any time using the measurement values via IO-Link.

All-rounder for detecting and measuring: The ODT 3C with triangulation principle

In many industrial processes, it is not only important that an object is present, but also that it is in a specific position or on the conveyor belt at a specific distance from the machine. Even checking whether an object is separate or lying on top of another object on the conveyor belt can be crucial for the subsequent (packaging) process steps. To perform these tasks with a single sensor, the sensor must supply both switching and measuring information to the machine control. We have achieved this with the development of the new ODT 3C.

The ODT 3C is both a switching and a measuring sensor. This makes it ideal for applications that involve both detection and measurement tasks. As a result, our customers can now perform these tasks easily and effectively with a single sensor.

Dough loop control in the baking industry

In the food industry, a machine rolls out dough that is later processed into baked goods. This machine rolls out the dough precisely to the required thickness. While being transferred to the conveyor belt, the dough must retain its shape. Sensors are needed to monitor this. The measured variable is the distance between the dough and the sensor, which must always be between 100 and 120 mm.

The sensor ODT 3C is positioned at the outlet of the rolling machine above the dough loop and points from above at the surface of the dough, which has been pressed by the machine, to supply a distance value to the superior PLC. The goal is to regulate the dough within an optimum distance range of 100–120 mm. If the sensor detects a measurement value outside this target range, the conveyor belt motors adjust the speed of the conveyor accordingly.
The measurement value is evaluated in the process data via IO-Link. In addition, diagnostic data is transmitted to the controller via IO-Link for Industry 4.0 purposes.

Pile positioning in the beverage/packaging industry

In the beverage industry, the filled bottles are often provided with secondary packaging in a carton packaging machine, where they are grouped together and combined into a unit pack ready for sale. The pre-cut cartons prepared on a pile must be automatically removed from the pile, separated and then provided for the gluing and folding process. To ensure optimum performance of the downstream process steps, the carton pile must be positioned at a specific point on the conveyor belt and then adjusted to be a defined distance from the laterally positioned sensor.

Using the ODT 3C, the carton pile can be scanned along its long side for purposes of presence monitoring (switching sensor function) and then continuously positioned to a defined distance (e.g. 120 mm) at the edge of the pile flap by means of a measurement value (measuring sensor function).

Quality and object height monitoring on the conveyor belt

In the food industry, the manufactured products (e.g. chocolate bars) are conveyed separately on the conveyor belt. During this process it is important to monitor whether any objects are lying on top of each other, meaning that they cannot be used for further processing (e.g. packaging).

The sensor ODT 3C is installed just above the conveyor belt so that it looks down on the products from above. It detects the objects (switching sensor function) and measures their height (measuring sensor function). In this way, the sensor ensures that the products are conveyed separately on the conveyor belt, are not lying on top of each other and can therefore be used for the packaging process.

Leuze revolutionizes sensor mounting on conveyor lines: For the detection of pallets, retro-reflective photoelectric sensors that are mounted on-site directly on the conveyor line are typically used. For the user, this means that he must perform the mounting and fine adjustment of the sensor himself and must allow for a certain amount of time for this work. 

With their innovative mounting brackets for the 25C sensor series, Leuze now offers the possibility to have the sensors for pallet detection installed by the manufacturer of the conveyor system already in the factory. The fine adjustment and initial commissioning of the sensor system and conveyor system can also be performed directly at the manufacturer.

The retro-reflective photoelectric sensor of the 46C series with broad, powerful light-band for the detection of objects with variable shape and openings reliably detects all pallet types.

Pallet detection on conveyor systems with pre-installed sensor system

The efficiency of a new conveyor line is to be maximized during commissioning. The employees should be able to begin immediately with operation after setting up on the conveyor line without needing to perform mounting and alignment work for the sensor system. Various pallet types are to run over the conveyor system, all of which need to be reliably detected. The high-frequency hall lighting should not affect the sensor. The sensors should repel dirt particles and the system must be low‑maintenance.

The sensor system is mounted already at the manufacturer of the conveyor system in the inner area of the conveyor by means of a special holder equipped with an integrated front screen for deflecting dirt particles.
Different pallet types can be reliably detected in transverse and lengthwise transport.
The sensor features ambient light sensitivity even with high-frequency LED hall lighting.

Challenge: Suppressing ambient light

Special ambient light configuration very efficiently suppresses ambient light sources (especially high-frequency LED lighting).

Clean solution: No soiling of the sensor

A 45° front screen in front of the sensor optics deflects dirt. The vibrations of the conveyor system cause particles to fall off automatically. Even larger dirt particles fall through the mounting bracket.
