S= K x T + DDS + Z

S – Safety distance [mm]

K – Approach speed [mm/ms]

The approach speed K is specified in the standard. If the resulting safety distance is greater than 500 mm, an approach speed of 1,600 mm/s is used. This corresponds to the speed of a person walking. If the resulting safety distance is less than or equal to 500 mm, an approach speed of 2,000 mm/s is used. This corresponds to the speed when operating with the hand or arm.

T – Overall system response time [ms]

DDS – Operating range [mm]

The operating range DDS is a fixed value of 1200 mm for the parallel approach and results from reaching over a protective field. Put simply: If a protective device only detects the legs, you can lean up to 1200 mm over the safety field, bringing your fingers that much closer to the danger zone.

Z – Additional distance factor [mm]
